Speech/Lisp Concerns

Myofunctional Therapy and Speech Therapy are NOT the same thing.

As therapists, we can work side by side to ensure our patients receive the best results.

OMT Can Help!

Myofunctional Therapy focuses on tongue placement and muscle control that can help with speech sounds.

When approaching speech concerns, Myofunctional Therapy can be considered as a foundational treatment as it focuses on the muscles and tongue placement needed for speech sounds. If the muscles and tongue are not functioning properly, adults and children may continue to experience difficulty with pronunciation of certain letters.

Lisp:

A lisp is the most common speech concern associated with myofunctional symptoms. It is associated with tongue thrust and mouth breathing habits. Someone with a lisp often struggles with the “S’' and “Ch” sounds.

Other common sounds that are connected with tongue thrust and mouth breathing are “T”, “D”, “N”, “L”. These sounds require precise movement and placement of the tongue, making it difficult for people who are struggling with control of their oral muscles.
